TOP MIL/AERO EMS C.R. INTERNATIONAL INC. EXPANDS CAPABILITY WITH ASM’S E BY SIPLACE PLATFORM E

Suwanee (USA), September 17, 2020 – Continuing to lead in the North American mid-speed placement sector, E by SIPLACE was again selected over competitive systems for its flexibility and expansive range of high-performance features. C.R. International Inc. (CRI), a long-time SIPLACE customer and trusted Mil/Aero EMS provider, cited the platform’s 01005 component placement capability, changeover simplicity and real-time component teach function as top factors in its E by SIPLACE investment decision.

CRI’s success with complex, high-reliability assemblies has earned the company a reputation as a trusted, knowledgeable partner for customers requiring IPC Class 3 assemblies, which are defined as products where continued high performance or performance on-demand in harsh environments is required. These applications represent close to 95% of the Laurel, MD-based EMS’ business, which includes PCB assemblies for satellites, space flight systems and, more recently, full flight products. As a high-mix, low-volume NPI and prototype specialist, CRI’s equipment set has to be flexible for a variety of product parameters, facilitate off-line set-ups for quick changeover, and be able to accommodate exceptionally challenging, high-technology board builds.

“I’ve been a SIPLACE user for over 30 years,” shares CRI President, Jeff Neisess. “With our recent qualification for full flight systems, it was imperative that we add next-generation placement technology that aligned with our financial and quality objectives. Given our product mix, we knew we needed an extraordinarily flexible system and other suppliers simply could not deliver. E by SIPLACE ticked all the boxes.”

Possessing many of the advanced technologies inherent with ASM’s high-volume SIPLACE systems, E by SIPLACE also comes at a price point that addresses the mid-speed, high-mix market’s operational realities. Ideal for manufacturers like CRI, where multi-product, high-complexity, frequent-changeover protocols are the norm, E by SIPLACE is a single gantry system that can be configured with a variety of placement heads to align with dynamic environments. The CRI system leverages the SIPLACE CP12/PP combination head, delivering placement accuracy of 30 µm on a broad component spectrum – from 01005s up to parts as large as 45 mm x 87.5 mm. Feeder capacity in a high-mix environment is another key consideration and E by SIPLACE’s 120-slot, intelligent feeder technology and offline component tables allows for multiple job set-ups and simple, fast changeover. These features, in addition to programming software ease-of-use, bring CRI’s productivity and future technology capability to a new level.

Speaking to the company’s constant focus on production efficiency and product utilization, CRI Business Manager Maureen Neisess notes that E by SIPLACE’s adaptability is a profitability advantage: “Anyone in the EMS business knows that pre-set component libraries become out-of-date quickly because parts change all the time; being able to quickly teach new parts and add them to the system’s library is critical. The E by SIPLACE system allows us to teach parts on the machine, which keeps production running and our productivity high. This feature, in addition to Z-height and board topography variation adjustments on-the-fly, enables efficient output and gives us a competitive edge.”

Since its installation in mid-June, CRI’s E by SIPLACE has helped the company improve overall product quality, while enabling more business opportunities. “Honestly, until you have a machine like this with such accuracy and expansive capability, you don’t realize how much it can improve product quality. On October 24th, 2019, members of CRI’s team had the opportunity to attend an informational webinar featuring the Chief Information Security Officer in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Katie Arrington. The webinar focused on increasing awareness of the new “Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification” (CMMC), which will soon become mandatory for all DoD contractors. This new cybersecurity standard is based on input from a variety of sources, including the current NIST SP 800 standards. CRI is very grateful to the NDIA for sponsoring this informational event. C.R. International Inc. is pleased to announce their recent collaboration with the cyber innovation facility DreamPort, located in Columbia, MD. DR. CALVIN BALL, HOWARD COUNTY EXECUTIVE, HONORS CRI FOR SMALL BUSINESS APPRECIATION WEEK 

C.R. During his April 25th visit, Dr. Ball and his daughters (who were accompanying their father due to it being “take your child to work day”) were able to tour our facility, learn about our hi-tech manufacturing process, experience some of our product offerings and meet key members of our team. As a family owned small business, it was very special to have received this recognition and share this day with Dr. Ball and his family. C.R. INTERNATIONAL INC. ADDS NEW FUJI HIGH-SPEED SURFACE MOUNT MACHINE          

C.R. International Inc. has added a new FUJI AIMEX III machine to increase the company’s ability to meet increasing customer demand for hi-speed throughput.

AIMEXIII-1-1030x484The FUJI AIMEX III gives CRI the capability to place 01005” (.254 x .127 mm) discrete components.  An additional benefit is 74,000 pph placement rate on a maximum PCB size of 24” W by 59” L.  On the fly vision ensures accurate placement and reduced component pick errors.  While CRI has always been able to place down to 0201 discrete components, recent customer requests prompted the selection of the FUJI  AIMEX III.

Jeff Neisess, company president, stated, “In the 35 years I have worked in the PCB industry, the demand for quicker, accurate, and smaller component placement is ever present.  Ultra small, like the 01005 size component, is now the new threshold. Our goal is to always meet our customers’ need and, better yet, be one step ahead of their requests.”

C.R. INTERNATIONAL INC. PARTICIPATES IN HOWARD COUNTY BUSINESS APPRECIATION WEEK, 2016

C.R. International Inc. (CRI) has been recognized by Allan Kittleman, Howard County Executive and the Howard County Economic Development Authorities (HCEDA)  for its’ accomplishments during the nine years of  contribution to the  MD economy. On Thursday, April 28, 2016, Jeff Neisess, President of C.R. International, Inc. was presented with a certificate of appreciation at CRI facilities in Laurel, MD.  Every  year HCEDA recognizes a selected number of small businesses that have the opportunity to showcase their advances during the Business Appreciation Week. On April 28th  CRI’s President, Jeff Neisess led the ambassadors from HCEDA and the Maryland Department of Commerce on a tour of their facilities and a brainstorm discussion about the expansion of hi-tech manufacturing in Howard County and Maryland.  CRI is proud to be a part of this program and part of the Howard County economy.  Maryland is an energetic and cooperative state encouraging small business to thrive.

C.R. INTERNATIONAL’S WORK WITH NASA ON LOW-DENSITY SUPERSONIC DECELERATOR (LDSD)

NASA seeks to use atmospheric drag as a solution for planetary atmospheric deceleration, deploying next-generation drag devices at high supersonic speeds to safely land crews, cargo and vehicles. NASA’s Low Density Supersonic Decelerators project, led for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is conducting full-scale, stratospheric tests of these breakthrough technologies high above Earth to prove their value for future missions to Mars. The most recent supersonic flight tests were conducted off the coast of Hawaii in 2014 and 2015, and could influence technologies used in Mars missions launching as early as 2020.

The mission was a resounding success!

The boards CRI populated were responsible for actuating pyrotechnics on the vehicle and they performed flawlessly.
